Visible Emissions Certification Program
The visible emissions
certification program consists of two "smoke schools" annually. These schools
are conducted in April and October and consist of two sessions per school. These
schools are open to regulatory personnel, consultants, and members of the
regulated community. The purpose of the program is to certify the participants’
ability to meet federal requirements for making visible emissions
determinations. The first session consists of a half day of lecture
presentations followed by a written exam and up to two and one half days of
field training and testing. The second session consists of two days of field
training only. Lecture certification is valid for three years and field
certification is valid for six months. The cost to attend ADEM’s Smoke School is
$200 for field certification only and $250 for both field and lecture.
